Need bread crumbs? Or perhaps you like making your own lamb, chicken or pork burgers, or sausages? Then again maybe you make baby food at home to avoid artificial ingredients? For all of these tasks you can enlist the help of your powerful KitchenAid stand mixer thanks to this fabulous attachment.

This tool increases the fun factor of your KitchenAid stand mixer several times over. Toss cubes of meat into the food tray, stomp 'em down, and watch the results wriggle out the front. Grind your own beef or chicken for patties or tacos. Blend your own sausage mixtures, from breakfast to boudin blanc. With additional attachments, you can turn it into a pasta maker or a sausage stuffer. It's easy to assemble and use. Most parts are dishwasher-safe; hand wash the grinding blades, wooden stomper, and cutting knife. --Betsy Danheim

This grinder is excellent and fast! I love making hash and it saves time and is easy to clean up! A must get add on.

Love this to make fresh ground chicken for tacos!

Reviewed by T. Leech, 2010-02-27

I bought this attachment over 3 years ago and don't use it as frequently as some of my other kitchen appliances but it has been used many times. I use it to make fresh meatballs by grinding pork and beef together, I double grind it. I grind up lots of chicken and freeze it in 1 lb loaves using my foodsaver and that makes great tacos and chicken meatloaf. I've never had a single problem with this grinder. As with any grinder cleaning it is bothersome but after rinsing the meat chunks out of it I just throw it all in the dishwasher using a baby bottle basket for the smaller parts. This is great for my occasional grinding!

Clogs, Grease and Doesn't Grind

Reviewed by OCD Foodie, 2010-02-17

I cook all the time and have spent a good deal of money on many kitchen gadgets. Some of these are more useful than others, but the Kitchen Aid Food Grinder Attachment is absolutely useless. In fact, it's so useless that I won't bother keeping it. I imagine that the good reviews on the site have been planted by marketers and not real people who actually cook.

Why do I hate this particularly tool? First, the meat doesn't always grind. When I tried to grind duck, the result was some mush from the meat getting stuck in the grinder and just spinning inside the mechanism. Other pieces would come out in 4 inch long strands as if I was trying to fashion batons or julienne from the meat. It's hardly appetizing to bite into a meatball and have it unravel like a ball of yarn in your mouth. Not exactly the texture you're looking for! Furthermore, a lot of the meat had grease from the machine on it so I had to weed out about a quarter of it creating a lot of waste. If both of those things weren't enough, the machine clogs and doesn't really move through the grinder at all. Last, it only adds insult to injury when the machine that didn't work has to be cleaned and it's a pain to do so. Come to think of it, I should have just thrown the darn thing away since I will NEVER use it again. Of course I could try to recover my cost by selling it, but I wouldn't wish this piece of garbage on my old employer whom I despise with a passion.

Works as advertised.

I don't know if KA recently made improvements, but the unit I have (SNFGA) works as advertised.
I bought this mainly for small batches of FRESH ground steak, and for that this works perfectly.
The unit I just received has stainless steel extrusion plates and cutter, they are certainly not aluminum or pot metal.
It has a large bronze main bearing and the worm is a heavy stainless steel shaft with a high density nylon worm sleeve.
I take what seems to me an obvious set of precautions and lubricate the bronze bearing, the contact point
at the rotating knife and extrusion plate, and the o-ring with olive oil, before use each use. This prevents any knife shavings or discoloration at the bearing and wear and tear to the o-ring.

I have ground about 10 pounds of meat running at level 4-6 with no damage to my K45 whatsoever. The grind is excellent even with 25% fat. I experienced no binding or feeding problems of any kind and the plastic pusher works with little pressure.

The unit is very easy to clean, I use mainly a bottle brush, for the plates an old tooth brush.
I haven't tried the pasta maker yet, but all those parts look like high quality nylon and stainless steel, so they should hold up.

Fine grindings

The grinder attachment for the Kitchen Aid mixer is a well made and useful tool. We ground 20 pounds of Tri-tip into chili meat and were very impressed with the ease of operation and ease of clean up. If you take your time to cut pieces that will fit easily into the hopper tube then the rest of the job will be easy.
